Thanks for stopping by!
This newsletter is for writers who are interested in the craft of fiction or an insiders’s view of the publication world. I started this publication because I felt that while there are many writing advice-type newsletters, a lot of them give somewhat superficial, glib advice. Specifically, I write longform articles that get into the nitty-gritty of things, like how to actually do something like plot a novel, or the ins and outs of publishing finances. (Very few of my posts are under 2 k— so if you’re looking for a 5 minute read ~this is not the newsletter you’re looking for~).
Who I am: I’m a traditionally published author. My first novel, Never Saw Me Coming, was nominated for an Edgar Award, has sold over 100,000 copies, has been translated into 13 languages, and was named one of the New York Times Best Thrillers of 2021. My second novel, A Step Past Darkness was just released on 2/20/24. I’ve also published numerous short stories and novellas. I’m a multi-genre author who has dabbled in literary, mystery/thriller, scifi, and horror.
What you’ll get here: Most of my articles generally fall under “craft” or “publishing.” The former can be very nuts-and-bolts, like How to Write Setting that Pops, The Problems with Dual-Timeline Novels, and Can I Turn a Pantser into a Plotter?, or more philosophical, like Why You Should Do Things You Are Not Particularly Good At. The publishing articles are an insider’s view on various aspects of the publishing world, like Untrue Myths About Publishing, Can I Be an Introvert and Still Sell Books?, and The Emotional Bomb of your Book Coming Out.
How Often: I publish once a week on Tuesdays at 11 am. Occasionally, I have some special posts that I will post without emailing out because they are super-niche topics and I hate clogging people’s inboxes.
What’s paywalled?: Free subscribers have access to everything from the past two months and one or two archived articles. Paid subscribers get everything and the full archive. I do this because these craft and publishing posts are really time intensive (for example this post Does Social Media Drives Sales? actually involved data analysis and regression, which I don’t think you will find elsewhere.) Paid subscribers can also get a query or first 10 pages review and a signed copy of one of my books. All subscribers will get pictures of, and screeds by my Siamese cat.
